47 Pakistanis injured in Makkah crane crash

ISLAMABAD: More than 50 Pakistani pilgrims had been injured in a crane crash in Makkah.

An official of Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony said on Saturday that seven of the wounded are in critical condition. 22 pilgrims, who sustained minor injuries, have been discharged after first aid treatment, while 17 are under treatment in several Saudi hospitals, six admitted in King Abdul Aziz Hospital and seven in King Faisal Hospital, he said. Strong wind and rains had caused the incident. The crane was being used in the expansion work of the Grand Holy Mosque in Saudi Arabia when it struck a circular area and nearby walkway, he added.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Office (FO) has said that no Pakistani pilgrim was among those killed in Grand Mosque crane incident. Foreign Office Spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah said, 22 Pakistanis were injured during the incident and they were being provided medical treatment in three hospitals in Saudi Arabia while 25 pilgrims sustained minor injuries. The Foreign Office spokesperson said that all the admitted patients were out of danger. He said that the government has set up a control room in Saudi Arabai to obtain information about the crane crash and updates about the injured persons.
