PM inaugurates Attabad tunnels

Nawaz says GB's infrastructure, tourism projects to ensure prosperity

ATTABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday inaugurated the 24-kilometer re-aligned patch of the Karakorum Highway and five tunnels at Attabad Lake after a massive landslide destroyed the road five years ago.

The prime minister unveiled the plaque of Rs 27.5 billion project besides taking a round of the re-aligned road. Earlier, National Highway Authority Chairman Shahid Ashraf Tarar briefed the prime minister about the features and importance of the multi-million dollar project completed in three years.

The NHA chief said that the project named as “Re-Alignment of Karakorum Highway at Attabad Barrier Lake”, would restore the road link of Gojal Valley with rest of Gilgit Baltistan. He said that China Road and Bridge Corporation of China and National Highway Authority jointly executed the project.

Nawaz Sharif urged the government of Gilgit Baltistan to focus on development projects related to road infrastructure, electricity and tourism and ensure their transparent and timely completion. Talking to the members of Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly and the ministers of the GB government, he said that the projects would usher in a new era of prosperity for the people of Gilgit Baltistan.

The prime minister called upon the ministers and MLAs of Gilgit Baltistan government to leave no stone unturned in carrying out the development projects with utmost dedication and honesty. He mentioned that the construction of Naltar road, university, hydropower project and a cardiology hospital were the genuine demands of the people of Gilgit Baltistan. He assured his government's support in materializing these projects.

Nawaz said tourism sector of Gilgit Baltistan had immense potential and stressed laying further focus on it to attract local and international tourists. He expressed satisfaction that around 0.7 million tourists thronged Gilgit-Baltistan this year besides flocking to Azad Kashmir and northern areas of Pakistan. Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong was also present during the meeting.
